  • As a web designer, you can greatly increase your marketability by learning Extensible Markup Language (XML). With the right XML training, you will know how to structure a wide variety of data for use on the Internet.

    Why Use XML

XML gives web designers the ability to future-proof their web pages. Unlike HTML, you can create your own markup tags using XML. With XML's flexibility, you are taking advantage of the latest technology and your pages are more likely to work on new mobile devices.

    XML Tutorials

The Internet is filled with free XML tutorials, but the quality and experience you receive from them will vary. Try the tutorials on W3 Schools, Tizag, or XML Files' websites to see if they are a good fit for you (see References and Resources). You also can find experienced XML programmers on Tek-Tips, DevX and other online forums who are willing to help you learn XML.

    Teaching Yourself

Many XML programmers are self-taught. If you pick up technical subjects easily, you can learn basic XML by reading the documentation at the World Wide Web Consortium website (see References). You also have the option of purchasing XML books, such as "Learning XML" by Erik T. Ray, "XML Visual QuickStart Guide" by Kevin Howard Goldberg, or "New Perspectives on XML" by Patrick Carey, to improve your skills.

    XML Certification

Once you have a solid understanding of XML, you can show employers your competency by passing an XML certification exam. Several vendors offer XML certifications, so do some research to learn about the vendor's reputation, and then choose the certification that is the most economical choice for you
