Extensible markup language (XML) is a programming language used to assist websites with content syndication. Meanwhile, extensible stylesheet language transforms (XLST) is used in conjunction with XML, or as the name suggests, transforms XML into a different format. Professionals who utilize these languages are known as computer programmers or webmasters, and are trained in a variety ways.

College

XML and XSLT coding are each taught at major universities and community colleges that provide courses in computer studies. Among these courses: computer science, information systems, Web design and mathematics. Not all webmasters are required to possess college training. Some only need a high school diploma and understanding of computer languages.

Certification

Webmasters can receive thorough training in XML and XSLT coding via certification programs offered by product vendors or professional organizations. The duration and costs of these programs vary, but often last no more than several weeks and consist of coursework and testing.

On the Job

Most XML and XSLT training can be received after Webmasters take their first job -- or launch their first website. In this instance, they learn by trial and error, as well as by those who are more experienced in computer programming languages.
