Format

Standard file extensions are usually two to four characters long, depending on type. For example, "myproject.apm" might be used by a CAD/CAM program to specify metafile mapping and scaling data.

Types

Software programs that utilize forms of APM (Aldus Placeable Metafile) file extensions include Alphacam, AutoPlay Audio Studio, ArcPad Mobile GIS and Windows Metafile image formats.

Origin

Placeable Metafiles were first developed by Aldus Corporation to specify how a metafile should be mapped and scaled on an output device. The Adobe Corporation now holds the patent on APM technology.

Identification

Some file formats have identifying HEX characters at the beginning of the file that can be used to verify file type. The HEX value for files with the .APM extension is "D7 CD C6 9A 00 00."

Compatibility

Since files with the .APM extension are not supported by Microsoft Windows API, to play back an APM file in Windows, first back up the file, open it with a hex editor, then remove the Placeable Metafile header starting at "offset 0x16."

Type

The .ALZ file extension is a file extension used by ALZip software, a compressed file developed by ESTsoft, Corp, a Korean-based company.

Function

ALZip is a Windows-based software that supports compression methods of over thirty archive formats.

If you receive an error message when attempting to open an .ALZ file, you need to identify a program that can access the file.
