Download and install the 32-bit Java installer from the official Java website. Java applets require Sun's Java runtime to be installed. You may be able to install Sun's Java plug-in from your Linux distribution's package manager, depending on your Linux distribution. See your Linux distribution's documentation for more information.
Check what version of Firefox is installed by clicking "Help" and "About." If the About window displays "Linux x86_64" at the bottom, you're using a 64-bit version of Firefox. Download and install a 32-bit version of Firefox from Mozilla's website or your Linux distribution's package manager. See your Linux distribution's documentation for more details.
Verify the Java plug-in is enabled by clicking "Tools" at the top of the Firefox window, clicking "Add-Ons," clicking the "Plugins" icon at the top of the Add-Ons window, clicking "Java Platform" in the list and clicking "Enable" if it is disabled.
Disable the NoScript browser extension if it is installed by clicking "Tools," clicking "Add-Ons," clicking the "Extensions" icon at the top of the Add-Ons window, clicking "NoScript" in the list, clicking "Disable" and clicking "Restart Firefox." You can also configure NoScript to allow Java applets. NoScript blocks java applets from loading by default.
Test whether Java is working or not with the official Java applet test website. If the test applet load, there may be a problem with the other Java applets, or they may not be compatible with the latest version of the Java plug-in.
The problem with yours and even Mozilla's instructions is the same problem:
"Verify the Java plug-in is enabled by clicking "Tools" at the top of the Firefox window, clicking "Add-Ons," clicking the "Plugins" icon at the top of the Add-Ons window, clicking "Java Platform" in the list and clicking "Enable" if it is disabled."
JRE6 is installed and the Java plugin in Firefox is missing, therefore it cannot be enabled nor disabled.
Many users would be helped if someone actually wrote an article that explains how to enable the Java plugin on Firefox version 8.
