Why do my reference images in 3ds max come out blurry when I apply them to a plane?

10/19/2011 04:12 by SallyPainting

For some reason, when I place a reference material on a plane in 3ds max 2010, it comes up fuzzy. I made the plane the exact height and width of the image, and it still comes out fuzzy. If anyone can point me to a very detailed tutorial or maybe some answers to why this is happening, it would be much appreciated. Thank-you!

  • if it's the problem I'm thinking of, it's not fuzzy, it's pixelated.... This is a viewport config problem. Open up Max, and go into customize/User interface. Then go into the viewports tab, and go down to "configure driver". In there there will be a series of check boxes on the bottom, (I'm sorry I don't have the software on this laptop right now, so I can't be TOO exact.....) there are boxes for match bitmap... 3 different check boxes at the bottom... I think 2 say match bitmap, and the other is like antialiased lines or something. Either way, just check all 3 of those, and ALSO MAKE SURE YOU BRING YOUR BITMAP SIZED UP TO THE HIGHEST THEY CAN GO instead of 256 or whatever they are by default. Once this is done, apply it, close the window, and restart max for those settings to take effect.

  • actually JGebauer is wrong. what he is talking about is when you insert a reference image directly into a viewport, not a plane.

you actually have to change the display driver. i used direct 3d and i had the same problem. so i switched to open gl.

to change it (in 3ds max 2012) go to customize > preferences > viewports > choose driver.

    then restart.

    (in 3ds max 2012 . 2009) go to customize > preferences > viewports > choose driver.

[ ./ ]match bitmap size  as closely as possible   then restart.  Thanks
