  • Windows Picture Viewer is bundled with the Windows system software and is used to display photographic images in a number of different file formats, such as JPEGs, BMPs and GIF files. The software has a simplistic interface and is typically used as the default software to display images loaded on the computer from a digital camera. All digital cameras that store files in a digital format will utilize the Windows Picture Viewer software as a default to open digital photographs.

    Digital SLRs

Digital SLRs will often use the Windows Picture Viewer software to display photographs on the computer, if the user has selected to save images as a "JPEG". JPEGs are a universal and standardized method of file compression and storage for digital images. The digital algorithm for deciphering and displaying JPEGs is built into the Windows Picture Viewer software. The only problem that a DSLR user will encounter is when photographing and storing these images in the "RAW" format. The RAW format is an uncompressed file format and each camera company has a different digital algorithm for their raw format.

    Digital Point-and-Shoot Cameras

Digital point-and-shoot cameras that are typically defined by their smaller physical size and ease of operation use Windows Picture Viewer to display images on your computer. As a factory default, point-and-shoot cameras will often be set to capture and store images using the JPEG format. This means that when your camera is connected to a PC, the computer will utilize the built-in Windows Picture Viewer software to display the stored photos.

    Web Cameras

Web cameras are small cameras that are either built into your notebook's display, or separately added to your desktop as both a small video or photo camera for chatting. Connecting through the USB port on the computer, the web camera is capable of taking digital still photographs, which are stored in the JPEG format. Web cameras depend on the default photograph application, which is typically the Windows Picture Viewer software to display any digital stills taken by the camera.
