  • Windows Photo Viewer has been around since Windows XP days, when it was known as Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. But Microsoft now encourages users to use Windows Live Photo Gallery instead. Although Photo Viewer can open, print and burn images to disc, Photo Gallery packs in a variety of features that are not possible with the older program.

Windows Live Photo Gallery is a part of Windows Live Essentials, an all-in-one software package designed to meet the needs of average computer users. The suite includes tools for photo-sharing, email, blogging, instant messaging, parental controls and photo and video management. You can install these programs and use them together for seamless integration.

        Photo Management

Photo Gallery gives users the ability to organize and search pictures easily. You can add tags, captions, flags and ratings to your photos to help identify them in searches. When browsing folders, you control which file details are shown and you can sort them by folder, media type, tag, date or other attribute. Photo Gallery recognizes the date stamps made by digital cameras, making it easy to find photos taken on specific dates.

        Photo Enhancement

Unlike Photo Viewer, the new Photo Gallery does more than just display pictures. You can do simple image-retouching as well. If you find yourself wanting to tweak digital photos a lot, Photo Gallery can make your life easier. You can clean up a picture, adjust color settings, resize, rotate, straighten and fix red eyes without use of third-party software.

        Photo Sharing

When you are ready to use your pictures, Photo Gallery gives you several options. You can set a photo as your desktop wallpaper with a single click. Or you can share your photos via Facebook, YouTube, SkyDrive, Flckr, Windows Live Groups, or a blog post. If you want to send pictures as email attachments, Photo Gallery can compress them at the size you choose.
