Connect an external audio adapter to the computer using either a USB connection or connecting it to the sound input with a mini to RCA cable. If you're connecting multiple CD players, you need something with multiple input ports. The type you can get can be as simple as an external sound card with mini or RCA ports, to a miniature sound mixer with volume and level controls.
Attach your CD players to the external card/mixer. An external adapter with multiple ports will usually have RCA audio ports (for the red and white split cables). A large CD player can have these, but a smaller portable one likely uses a mini (1/8 inch) stereo port. Use a straight RCA cable or a mini-to RCA one, depending on the ports for each.
Install the drivers for the adapter if needed. These are in a software program that will be included with the adapter. Insert the included CD-ROM into the computer, and install at least the software program for the drivers. (It may also include a media player application you won't use if you have your own virtual DJ.)
Normalize the levels on the adapter by turning all the dials to the midway point and the volume to near the top. Use the controls on the virtual DJ program to adjust volume and other levels while playing and recording music.
Open the Virtual DJ program suite and load both songs into the mixer. Your music files will be listed and displayed in the lower-left corner of the program. Locate the first song you decide to use and drag its link to the blank data form above the turntable on the left side of the program. The song will begin playing automatically. Determine and set your BPM (beats per minute) based on the first song you load. The second song should correlate with the first music file.
Load and cue the second song. The second song should be set to the BPM that is being used for the first song. Move the second song to the first beat and select the "Cue" button to time when the second song will begin playback. (The "Cue" button will be a square button on the lower-left side of the turntable.)
Configure the gain and pitch settings for both songs. This is one of the most important steps for blending. This step configures the balance of the blend and the pitch mastering of both songs to ensure the two actually correlate. Use the default mixing settings to create a starting point for your settings. Listen while the first song is playing and adjust the pitch to match the pitch of the first song. Adjust the pitch in 0.1 increments to make chromatic adjustments. (This allows you to adjust the pitch by half steps so you do not miss the actual pitch.)
Begin mixing according to the beat. This depends solely on discretion, so you must use your better judgment in deciding when the second song should begin blending with the first song. It is best to listen and examine the song to find the best point to begin mixing. Cue the second song by pressing the "Cue" button again to signal the second song when the song playing comes to a small break leading to a downbeat. (For example, this is the same as pausing at a comma in a sentence when reading.)
Mix the full song by incorporating the beat and the pitch of both songs. Slowly turn down the high-, mid- and low-volume modules on the first song and overlap these modules with the same modules for the second song. Compensate for the differentiation in the beat of both songs to balance the blend by moving the vinyl on the turntables forward and backward. This will give you a chance to alter certain small elements of the beat that are imperfect. Once you are done altering, the beat will be perfectly blended ,and the pitch of both songs will match.
Install Virtual DJ. If you are installing from a CD, insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive and double-click "My Computer" and then the CD-ROM drive. If you are installing from a download, see the Resources section below for the link.
Click "Run" in the "Open File" window.
Select your language and click "OK."
Choose "Next" on the "Welcome" window.
Read the "End User Agreement" and click "Next."
Choose the location for the download in the "Destination Folder" menu and click "Next."
Select "Next" to begin copying the files to the destination folder.
Click "Finish" in the "Installation Complete" menu to complete installation.
Open Virtual DJ by clicking on the "Virtual DJ" icon on your desktop.
Load a song into one of Virtual DJ's virtual decks. Allow it to fully load and for Virtual DJ to analyze the pitch and BPM of the song.
Click the lock icon located nearby the tempo slide so that it appears unlocked. This is the "Key Lock" and, when unlocked, allows a song's pitch to change naturally with tempo change, a la a vinyl record.
Move the tempo slider down into the 60 bpm range. The song is screwed.
After screwing the song in the first deck, load the same song into Virtual DJ's second deck. Allow it to fully load.
Make sure the "Key Lock" on the second deck is unlocked as well.
Press Virtual DJ's "SYNC" button to match the tempos of the two decks. Make sure the cross-fade is pulled completely towards to the first deck.
Begin playing the song on the first deck. Allow only one beat to pass before beginning the song in the second deck.
Now use the cross-fader to occasionally cut to the second deck, which should still be playing one beat behind the first. This will create a chopping effect.
Pull a song into either deck of Virtual DJ. Allow it to load completely.
Play the song.
Use the "Flippin Double" and "Beatgrid" effects to achieve a result similar to the cross-fading method. The "Beatgrid" effect is also customizable.
Navigate to Virtual DJ's Skin Library (virtualdj.com).
Choose a skin that you find appealing, and click on its thumbnail. You can sort by number of downloads or date created.
Download the skin.
Find the file you just downloaded.
Move the file into Virtual DJ's skin folder. For example, you might find this under My Documents\VirtualDJ\Skins.
Double-click the file. It will install the skin into Virtual DJ's database.
Open Virtual DJ. Choose the "Config" option in the top righthand corner. Your new skin should show up under the "Skins" tab.
Find a skin you want to install. Virtual DJ has a skin library at www.virtualdj.com where you can find hundreds of skin designs. The skins aren't installed on the Virtual DJ program. They are located on the website. You can use a skin that is already installed on Virtual DJ but there will only be 10 options to choose from.
Click on the skin you want to download.
Move the skin into your Virtual DJ skin's folder. Your Virtual DJ will probably be listed in your "My Documents" folder. If you click on the program, you will see a few folders, one of them being "Skins." Open the folder and drag your downloaded skin into it.
Double-click on the file. This will install it to the DJ's database.
Open your Virtual DJ software and click on "Config." The tab will be in the top right corner of the program. Under the "Skins" tab, click on the skin you want to install. This will install your skin to your DJ.
