Avoid illicit websites. Sites that contain violent and illicit content tend to be infected by malware more than normal websites. If it is necessary to use these websites, browse with care and caution.
Turn on your firewall. Many anti-virus programs come with firewall features. If you do not have anti-virus software, you can rely on Windows' built-in firewall. However, it is recommended to use anti-virus program as an alternative method of defense.
Use anti-virus software to scan your computer regularly for malware. Windows operating systems come with Windows Defender, which is software that helps you remove malware from your computer. To perform a scan with Windows Defender, click "Start," type "Windows Defender" in the search bar, and click the first icon. Next, go to the top of the screen and click "Scan." The resource section below contains more antiv-irus software you can use.
Take extreme precautions when using P2P (person-to-person) file-sharing. While using P2P technology is a convenient way of sharing multimedia files online, your computer can also get infected with malware from these files (especially pirated files). Select wisely what you download from Torrent and other P2P websites.
Try utilizing a standard rather than an administrator account. Microsoft recommends doing this because malware can delete and infect essential files in your operating system if you are using a standard account.

Open your PC cabinet. How you will do this will depend on the make of your PC, but most cases can simply be slid out of the cabinet.
Locate the cased cabinet fan. The fan will be protected and partially covered by a plastic casing, but you will be able to see the blades of the fan through it. Remove the fan by removing the screws in each corner of the case using a screwdriver.
Measure the width of the fan. Put the edge of the measuring tape on the top left corner of the fan and pull it horizontally to the other opposite corner.
Find the height of the fan. Measure from the bottom edge to the top edge of the fan case.
Measure the depth of the fan. Stand the fan case up and measure the case from the front corner to the back corner.
Perform frequent system scans for spyware. Spyware programs can actively run in the background as services and processes. Their job is to spy on frequently visited websites and analyze frequent user trends. Then, relevant product advertisements are presented on your screen in the form of pop-ups. Each product purchased from such ads earns the spyware author a commission from the product's manufacturer. Since this requires constant monitoring of the user, your PC gradually loses performance, resulting in slow response times. Scan your computer for spyware at least once a week to ensure maximum system stability.
Clean up excessive system services and processes. Click the "Start" menu and select the "Run" or "Search" box. Type "Msconfig" without the quotes and press "OK" to launch the System Configuration Utility. Browse to the "Services" tab and check the box stating "Hide all Microsoft Services." Uncheck each item that belongs to a third party organization, as long as you do not need it to launch simultaneously with your computer. Deselecting these items does not uninstall the actual program; it disables them from loading during startup, resulting in additional free memory and system resources.
Browse to the "Startup" tab within the Windows System Configuration utility. In this menu, uncheck any third party or non-system programs, such as Windows Live Messenger and other optional utilities. Press "OK" when finished making all modifications. Save any work currently active and restart your computer.
Defragment your computer hard disk. Over time, the more you use a program, the more related files get scattered throughout your local hard disk. This often makes the Start menu slow to respond and computer windows and menus take longer to launch. This process searches all computer data available and organizes it accordingly in your hard disk's clusters. Click "Start," followed by "Programs," "Accessories," then "System Tools," and select "Disk Defragmenter." Defragment your hard disk every week to keep your PC from running slowly and losing valuable performance.
