PeerGuardian used to be my favorite. It's a good p2p program protector. but after I upgrate my system operation, i must change the firewall. It should be further developed.
There is a known list of IP addresses that are owned by various corporations (government, RIAA, etc).
This program blocks all IP's in that list.
Therefore, it reduces your chances of RIAA connecting to you, getting
copyrighted data from you, and then suing you because you reproduced
material to which they own the copyright.
peerguardian is ok in theory, but I don't think it's really giving you any type of security. People look up the ip ranges for RIAA and MPAA and other companies that are known for hating files, then add
this to the blocklists. It'll keep your computer from accessing a
computer owned by one of these people, but it's not fullproof, because
they're relying on the list being accurate. (they could get on an IP
that isn't listed as one of these people, or pay a company to do it for
them)
the hash files thing is because torrents check files against a hash to split it into parts as its sending it,
and to make sure the file is completely downloaded, it's not really
about obfuscating the transfer.
Having said that, they mostly go after the first people to upload, not
caring about the tens of thousands that download it later. Stop it at
the source, they figure (doesn't work, obviously, since it's still
happening)
Some run their torrents through a proxy program called "TOR" but some
claim this is like shooting up a flare saying "ILLEGAL STUFF HAPPENING
RIGHT HERE!"
Your ISP doesn't really care what you do, as long as THEY don't get a letter about it.
Protowall (from Bluetack - B.I.S.S. Forums)
There are 2 versions of Protowall, the 2.0.1 build 9 version, and the
last stable version 1.43, on two different system configurations running
WinXP SP2 (one with firewall/antivirus/antispyware) and one with none
of these installed. However, we predictably received the error message,
“Protowall.sys not loaded” on both systems. We checked the FAQ and
proceeded to troubleshoot the problem, but to no avail. The procedures
involved are somewhat lengthy, and not for the novice PC user. Using a
blocklist is not exclusive to Protowall - it is the blocklists
themselves that are required and can easily be imported into the
PeerGuardian program instead, with much less hassle to those who
generate the error message. Kudos to you if Protowall installs perfectly
the first time. If not, don’t fuss too much with it, just move on to
PeerGuardian 2.
Peerguardian is capable of blocking incoming and outgoing connections based on IP
blacklists. The system is also capable of blocking custom ranges,
depending upon user preferences.
lt basically prevents the government seeing what you're downloading, as well as your ISP.
My friend said it's pretty safe, he has recommended me to use it but l'd rather prevent downloading things of Torrents altogether because my brother does it for me instead.
