Start Norton Ghost. From the main program screen, select "Ghost Boot Wizard." Follow the instructions to create a floppy boot disk. Label the disk and keep it in a safe place when not in use.
Place the Ghost Backup Floppy Disk in the floppy drive and turn on the computer. You may see some error messages. Ignore them. After a few minutes, you'll see the Ghost program display.
Click on "OK" to start the program. Be sure to record the license number since you need it to restore from Ghost backups. Choose the menu item "Backup/Restore."
Choose "Local," and then "Partition." Click "To Image." Select the source drive that you want to back up, which is normally drive 1. If you have more than 1 drive and are unsure which one is your source drive, determine the right drive based on the size and volume label. Choose the "C" partition.
Scroll down to choose the location where the backup image will be copied. This could be a second drive in your computer or a CD drive.
Type in a simple name for the file name. Click "Save."
Select "Fast" or "High" for compression. Choose "Yes" to proceed with the partition dump. Wait for the image to be saved. Once the image is created, click "Continue," "Quit" and "Yes."
Start the Norton Ghost program. Choose the menu item "Backup/Restore." Select "Local" and then "Partition."
Scroll down to the location where you saved the backup ghost image and select it for the "From Image" entry. Enter your license key.
Select local destination drive "1", "1" for the destination partition, and click "OK." Check the details carefully and click "Yes." This will restore your backup image.
Install the Norton software package on your computer by inserting the installation disk, and following the wizard installation directions. If you do not have the software, visit the Norton website listed in the resource to purchase it.
Start the Ghost Disk Creation software package by double clicking the program icon located in your start menu. When the program opens, choose the "File -> Create Ghost Recovery Disk" file menu option from the programs primary file menu.
Insert the recovery disk that came with your software purchase in your CD/DVD drive. If you purchased the software online, you will need to burn the recovery disk to CD before starting the Ghost Disk creation process by selecting the "Create Recovery Disk" file menu option.
Choose the "Automatic" ghost disk creation feature option and select the "Next" menu button that appears on the next screen of the program. Norton will then copy your configuration files to a temporary location on your computer.
Insert a blank CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R when Norton Ghost prompts you to insert a blank disk in your computer. Norton will then burn the Ghost files to your CD. When it is finished with the process, select the "Finish" button on the next file menu and your Ghost Disk is created.
Open the Norton Ghost program by double-clicking on its desktop icon. Find the "Norton Ghost" heading at the upper-left side of the screen. Click on the "Ghost Basic" button underneath the heading or instead press the "Ctrl" and "B" buttons to navigate to the basic features menu screen.
Click on the "Tasks" button and then select the "Disc Image" option. Scroll down through the list of available disc image types you can create, such as a CD or USB drive. Decide which type of device you want to use and insert the device into the corresponding port on your computer. Click on the name of the device you are using and then click on the "Next" button.
Scroll down through the list of drives connected to your computer that will appear in the window. Locate the specific hard drive that you want to copy for a disc image. Click on the check box next to the drive and then click on "Next."
Click on the "Browse" button and then find the location of the USB drive, CD drive, or DVD drive where your blank disc is stored on the computer. Click on the drive letter corresponding to the disc drive, such as "E:\" if your DVD drive is labeled as "E." Click on the "Next" button again.
Click on the slider bar and drag the slider to towards the "Fast" button if you want the disc image to be created at the fastest possible speed. Drag the slider towards the "Slow" button if you want the disc image to be compressed into a smaller file size, which will increase the amount of time it takes to create the image. Click on "Create Disc Image" button to save the disc image to the blank device.
Open Norton Ghost 12.0.
Open the "Tasks" menu, and click "Run or Manage Backups." This will open the Run or Manage Backups window.
Click the "Define New" button. This will open the Define Backup Wizard.
Select "Back up my computer," and click the "Next" button.
Select the drive that you would like to back up. If you would like to create a backup of more than one drive, hold down the ctrl button and click each drive. Once you've finished, click the "Next" button.
Select the type of recovery point you'd like to use: Recovery point set or Independent recovery point. Recovery point set makes one master backup of your computer, and updates the backup as your computer is changed. Independent recovery point creates a new backup file every time. Recovery Point set is the recommended setting. Click "Next" after you've made your choice.
Click the "Browse" button, and choose where you'd like the backup file to be saved. Click the "Next" button.
Enter a name for your backup. Click the "Next" button.
Choose a schedule to determine when Norton Ghost should automatically update your backup file. If you don't want Norton Ghost to do this automatically, select "Manual." Click the "Next" button.
Review your settings and, if you are satisfied with them, select "Run backup now," and click the "Finish" button. This process may take some time.
Insert a blank DVD or CD into the disk drive on your computer. Select "Cancel" on the default Windows setting that displays on your computer.
Open Norton Ghost 10. Then, select the Norton Ghost "Tasks" menu option.
Choose the "Create Ghost Recovery Disk" menu from the menu options.
Select the "Next" button followed by the "Automatic" menu choice on the subsequent Ghost menu options.
Choose the "Browse" menu option for selecting the location of the drive to write the boot disk and select your CD/DVD drive followed by the "Next" menu button. After the recovery disk is finished being written to, single left-click the "Finish" button to complete the Ghost 10.0 boot disk creation.
Reboot your computer and select the "Use Norton Recovery Environment" menu option.
Attach any desired portable memory storage devices to your computer and continue the recovery.
Select "Accept" when asked to accept the end user's license agreement.
Choose the "Time Zone" for your location from the drop-down list on the next menu and choose the "OK" menu button.The recovery tool will use the time zone to help determine the appropriate recovery point for Norton Ghost.
Exit Norton recovery, and Norton Ghost will be restored without having to use the Ghost CD.
Open Norton Ghost 11 (deployed under the Norton Save and Restore name) and choose the "Recovery" menu option.
Left-click the "Recover My Files" menu option and select the "Recover Files" menu option to have Norton automatically recover your files.
Select the "Original Folders" option on the subsequent menu to have Norton Ghost restore your files to their original location.
Choose the "Restore" menu button, and Norton will automatically recover your files.
Open the Norton Ghost application. Norton Ghost automatically suggests what drives to back up. One of those drives is the Vista "C" drive. Select a drive and click the "Next" button. This opens the backup image wizard.
Select a destination for the image. Hard drive images created by Ghost copy all information on the drive. If your hard drive usage is 10GB, then the location of the image backup needs to have this kind of storage capacity to hold the backup. Most people use an external hard drive or a DVD to store a hard drive image. Once the location is selected, click the "Next" button.
Review the summary screen. Before the backup begins, Norton Ghost displays a summary screen of your choices. Look over the summary to ensure you chose the correct options and click the "Finish" button.
Wait for the backup to be created by the application. This can take several minutes, so you can walk away from the computer while the process completes. Once Norton Ghost is finished creating the Vista copy, navigate to the location of the saved file to ensure it was fully copied. Ensure the file is stored in a safe place in your home so it does not get corrupted.
Access the Norton Ghost program. Click "File" and then choose "Create a Recovery Disk."
Select "Next." Insert the Norton Ghost CD into your computer's disk drive and then choose "Browse."
Click the drive letter for your computer's disk drive, such as "D" or "F." Select "OK" and then click "Next."
Choose the radio button labeled "Automatic (Recommended)." Choose "Next" and then remove the Norton Ghost CD from your disk drive. Insert a blank CD or DVD into the disk drive.
Click "OK" to begin the automatic recovery disk creation process. Choose "Test Recovery Disk" to ensure the disk was created correctly and then choose "Finish." Follow the on-screen instructions to create a new recovery disk if the test process shows an error message.
Insert the Norton Ghost 12.0 CD into your computer or double-click the downloaded file on your desktop.
Click "Next" at the Install Shield Wizard page, read the End-User License Agreement and click "I accept."
Click "Next" twice more, then click "Install."
Choose "Finish" when installation completes.
Remove the CD (if applicable) and restart your computer.
Open your System Configuration Utility. In Windows XP this requires you to open your Start menu, click "Run..." and type "msconfig" into the window that appears. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, use the search feature in the start menu to type "msconfig" and click the icon that appears to open the System Configuration Utility.
Select the "Selective Startup" option and uncleck every box available.
Click the "Services" tab and check the boxes next to "Windows Installer" and "Task Scheduler" so that Norton Ghost will install properly.
Click "OK" and click "Restart Windows" or "Restart Now" (depending on your OS) to restart Windows with the saved options.
Place your Norton Ghost disk into the CD drive after Windows restarts. The installer will open automatically, giving you a variety of options.
Install Norton Ghost by first clicking "Install" from the installer window. From there, select where you want to install the game on your hard drive and click "Install." From there, the installation is automatic.
Launch the Norton Ghost program and look for the "Tasks" pane. Within this pane, click on the "Recover My Computer" option. A "Recover My Computer" window will open.
Click on the most-recently created image and then click on the "Recover Now" button. Click the "OK" button in the "Summary" window that will appear.
Click "Yes" when the computer asks for your confirmation to proceed with the recovery. Also, click the "Yes" button when the computer asks you to restart your computer.
Insert the recovery disk that you created with Norton Ghost when the program prompts you to, and then click "OK."
Select the backup file that was most-recently created and click "Open." The recovery process will now begin. You have restored your computer using Norton Ghost after a crash.
Open Norton Ghost by double-clicking the program icon on your computer's desktop or selecting the "Norton Ghost" menu option from the "Program Files" submenu on the "Start" menu of your computer.
Select the "Ghost Basic" menu button from the program's file menu or click the "Ctrl + B" keys simultaneously. Choose "Tasks > Disk Image."
Select either a "CD" or "USB" image, depending on the storage destination for your Norton Ghost Image. Insert a writable CD/DVD or USB-connected storage drive into your computer. Select the desired output location using the program's file chooser that is displayed. Select the "Next" menu button.
Select the drive on your computer that you desire to make a disk image of. You can back up your entire hard drive or a subset of files and programs depending on the available space on the destination drive. Click the Next menu button after you click the check box next to the desired source location.
Select the "Browse" menu button and choose the destination drive for the Ghost Image followed by the Next menu button. Choose the "Create Disk Image" menu option and your Norton Ghost Image will be created.
