Microsoft Office OneNote is
a product in the Microsoft Office software suite that allows you to gather
notes, research and other information and organize it into digital notebooks,
complete with sections and tabs.
Features
OneNote allows you to
gather all of your information in one place. Organize notes into separate
notebooks with color-coded sections and tabs. OneNote accepts text, pictures,
audio, video and digital handwriting.
Benefits
OneNote lets you keep all
of your information in one place and allows you to import information from
other Microsoft Office programs directly into OneNote. Other programs, such as
Internet browsers, give you an option to "Print to OneNote" when you
open the print screen, though this option is only available for the 2007
version of OneNote.
Versions
OneNote 2003 was the first
version of OneNote released by Microsoft. OneNote 2007 contains extra features,
like the acceptance of digital handwriting. OneNote Mobile is basic note-taking
software available on some Windows smartphones.
Free Trial
You can download a 60-day
free trial of OneNote 2007 from Microsoft's website. You must activate the
trial at the time of installation, according to the instructions, or OneNote
will function as a viewer only. Once you activate the software, you will be
able to use all of OneNote's functions for 60 days.
Cost
As of December 2009, you
can purchase OneNote 2007 as a stand-alone product from Microsoft's website for
$99.95. The cost to upgrade to OneNote 2007 from earlier Microsoft Office
suites is $79.95. OneNote 2007 is included in Office Home and Student 2007,
which retails for $149.95 as of December 2009.
OneNote is a software
program from Microsoft originally created to run on tablet PCs. The software
was so popular, however, that Microsoft quickly began packaging it as part of
the standard Microsoft Office Suite. The software is designed to allow you to
organize your notes and calendar together with Outlook (Microsoft’s calendar
management software). While OneNote is quite powerful, numerous tools exist to
make it work even better.
Canvas for OneNote
Canvas is designed to
provide a broader overview of the notes you have stored in OneNote. In essence,
what it does is create a kind of virtual “canvas” on which you can see a
graphical representation of all your notes.
Task Requests from OneNote Meeting Notes
While the name may seem
rather involved, the purpose of this program is quite simple. The software
allows you to create better integration between the notes taken during a
meeting on OneNote (a task for which it was originally designed) and Microsoft
Outlook, which is designed to maintain your calendar. The software is capable
of looking through your notes and helping you arrange tasks for other Outlook
users, saving you the trouble of manually inputting such requests.
Favorites for OneNote
Another common issue when
using OneNote is that you create so many different notebooks on the system it
becomes nearly impossible to find the notebook one you need. This problem is
easily solved using the OneNote Favorites power tool. This software allows you
to designate certain notebooks under OneNote as favorites so they can be easily
retrieved at a later date.
OneNote Word Count
One of the deficiencies of
OneNote is that it is incapable of providing a simple word count for you. This
is because the software was never designed as a word processor but more as a
notepad on a computer screen. However, with OneNote Word Count, you can now get
an exact word count for your OneNote notes.
OneNote 2003 is
multi-feature software that focuses on capturing and storing information in the
form of notes. OneNote 2003 was developed by the Microsoft Corporation and was
designed for flexibility and ease of use while doing day-to-day tasks.
History
OneNote 2003 was introduced
by Microsoft on April 5, 2004.
Features
OneNote 2003 has an
easy-to-use interface that features a tabbed format (color-coded tabs,
sections), an automatic save function (allowing you to never have to worry
about losing un-saved data) and the capability to transfer information between
projects with ease. OneNote 2003 has the ability to import various formats,
including several types of documents, media files and on-screen handwritten
notes.
Benefits
OneNote 2003 has a
single-window format that allows you to work with information in one window,
instead of alternating between multiple programs at the same time.
Warning
OneNote 2003 is now
obsolete. Newer versions have been released with additional features that
surpass the capabilities of OneNote 2003.
Microsoft OneNote provides
a streamlined tool for taking notes, conducting research and creating projects.
OneNote contains notebooks, sections and tabs that than can be kept private or
shared publicly. Features include drawing tools, audio and video embedding.
OneNote also features a clipping tool for copying website sections directly
into OneNote. Add-ons and tools increase the functionality of OneNote making it
a comprehensive organizational tool. The program is bundled with Microsoft
Office 2007 and Office 2010.
OneNote Calendar
Einstein Technologies
offers calendar integration with OneNote Calendar. The calendar tool allows
access to OneNote documents by double-clicking links organized by date. OneNote
Calendar features a preview pane to view contents on the page, full screen mode
and layout switching to accommodate different resolutions and screen sizes,
including a PC tablet. Users also have the ability to create new OneNote pages
directly from the calendar.
Canvas for OneNote
Canvas for OneNote, by
Microsoft Labs, is a free add-on tool for viewing, editing and organizing
OneNote notebooks with a spatial view of images. Thumbnail images can be
re-grouped, deleted and copied for inclusion into other notebooks. The tool
allows users to zoom in on and pan documents. A timeline feature to facilitate
search is also included.
OneNote Word Count
OneNote Word Count gives a
detailed summary of word counts. The summary report displays a count for words
in the title, words on the page and character totals. It also reports on the
number of outlines and outline elements on the page. Additionally, the tool
counts words created using the ink feature in OneNote, which allows freehand
writing with a mouse or pen tools.
Microsoft Mathematics Add-In
Microsoft created the
Mathematics Add-In for Word and OneNote to solve equations, plot graphs and
simplify math tasks. The tool comes equipped with mathematical symbols and an
import option for additional symbols. The add-in supports numerous functions including:
trigonometry calculations, matrix operations and statistical computations.
Graphing options provide the ability to plot graphs in 2-D or 3-D.
Xiipy Desktop for OneNote
Xiipy analyzes OneNote
content to create automatic web searches for the most relevant terms. Xiipy
toolbars sit on the right side of the notebooks pages and to the lower left of
the page, remaining accessible but out of the way. The tool provides a list of
links produced by the search and a set of thumbnails for images found. Features
also include a tag cloud to display terms found within the document.
Requirements
Using Microsoft OneNote and
add-on tools requires Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP.
Installation of .NET
Framework 2.0 is also necessary to run the OneNote software.
Microsoft OneNote is a
multimedia note-taking utility that comes in the Microsoft Office suite of
products. OneNote allows users to create notebooks and compile research and
notes using text, graphics and sound. In addition to the utilities that come
packed with OneNote, there are a number of add-ins available for OneNote users
can take advantage of to help extend the capabilities of the software.
OneNote Canvas
Canvas is a OneNote add-in
that allows you to view and navigate your notebook collections on a Canvas
backdrop. Users can work directly on the canvas with zoom, pan and the ability
to add and rearrange or insert new pages in the notebook of your choice.
Clip to OneNote
The Clip to OneNote
(Firefox add-in) utility lets users browse the Internet and collect research
data, then send it directly to OneNote. This information can be accessed later
and used in OneNote. This allows you to get your research done without having
to worry about organizing it until you need it.
Table of Contents Generator
The OneNote Table of
Contents generator, available from Microsoft, is an add-in for OneNote that
allows you to generate a table of contents in your notebooks in the same way
you would a word processor. This is handy for accessing notebooks when you need
to quickly find specific information.
Merge Pages Utility
Another powertoy for
OneNote, available from Microsoft, is the Merge Pages utility. It allows you to
open a OneNote notebook, select specific pages, and merge them into a single
section.
Mobile Device Utility
Available from Microsoft,
the OneNote Mobile Device utility lets you send OneNote notebooks or sections
to cell phones, PDAs, and other mobile devices from within the program. This is
handy for sending bits of information to your phone when you may need to
reference something while you're on the road and away from OneNote.
Microsoft OneNote is a
software application for note taking, collaborating and sharing ideas and
materials between multiple people and computers. Originally released in 2003,
OneNote has seen three major releases and the newest OneNote 2010 is part of
Microsoft's Office 2010 suite of productivity applications. Its features are
based around creating and managing content and sharing it across platforms. The
program is not available as a stand-alone application, but comes with all three
primary editions of Microsoft Office: Home and Student, Home and Business and
Professional.
Creation Features
The Linked Notes feature
allows users to create content in OneNote while working in other Microsoft
applications, such as Word or Internet Explorer, and allows linking between
documents in various programs. OneNote can also automatically gather documents
from compatible programs and import them into OneNote. OneNote has stylistic
options similar to Microsoft Word and includes the same formatting shortcut
keys, as well as the Format Painter tool for use in content creation.
Management Features
OneNote's quick filing
feature allows users to set specific notebooks as destinations, keeping
multiple types of content automatically organized. Since more than one person
might view and edit a document, opening public content gives users a view of
recent changes to quickly locate new information and restore improperly edited
material. OneNote also features a linking system of tying notes together, so
users may navigate relevant documents via hyperlink. A
"search-as-you-type" feature makes finding specific notebook
information faster and more efficient.
Sharing Features
Users of OneNote can make
all new notes available for other users to see, edit, save and comment on from
a remotely accessible location. Users may also edit shared notebooks
simultaneously with other connected individuals. The OneNote Web App allows
users to access this content from a remote Internet browser and OneNote Mobile
extends this functionality to Windows Phone 7 devices, although the mobile
application requires an additional download and does not allow editing.
OneNote is a Microsoft
product that is also part of the Home/Student and Ultimate versions of
Microsoft Office. EndNote is a Thomson Reuters program that helps students,
writers and researchers track their sources and citations.
Users
OneNote is geared toward
personal and hobbyist users, students and business workers. EndNote is designed
more for college-level students, and academics and those who write research
reports.
EndNote Features
EndNote helps people format
bibliographic information in a variety of citation styles, as well as locate
and download full text articles in databases based on bibliographic
information.
OneNote Features
OneNote allows you to take
handwritten--using a tablet PC or scanner--or typed notes, copy a variety of
media from other programs into OneNote notebooks and share and work on
documents with others.
Integration
OneNote integrates with
other Microsoft Office products, allowing users to copy text, tables, graphs,
pictures and audio/video files into their project notebooks. EndNote X3
integrates with other word processing programs, including Apple Notes,
Microsoft Word and OpenOffice, to include bibliographic information in research
documents.
Cost
As of February 2010,
OneNote 2007, as a stand-alone product, is available from Microsoft for $99.95.
EndNote X3 is available to individuals as a download for $249.99, or on disc
for $299.99. Institutional/bulk pricing is available.
Just figured this out!!! It's been bugging me for months!
When you use the one note driver to print (print:select printer:One Note 2010), you can click properties/preferences for it as a printer.. There is the option to print landscape or portrait! Note quite sure how to set this as a default but now there is no need to rotate them as images in One Note.
Using Microsoft Office
OneNote 2003 SP1 or OneNote 2007 you can group and ungroup pages using the
context menu. This feature is not available in previous versions nor is it
available in OneNote 2010.
Group Pages
You create a group of pages
whenever you add a sub-page. You can also create a group from existing pages by
moving the page you want as the primary page just before the other pages in the
group. Select the page tabs of the pages you want in the group by holding down
either the Control key or the Shift key and clicking. Right-click and select
Group Pages. In OneNote 2010, any primary page with one or more sub-pages is
considered a group without performing the Group Pages function. Double-click
the primary page to select the group and perform group functions.
Ungroup Pages
To unlock a group of pages,
right-click the group and select Ungroup Pages.
Locking Groups
It is not possible to lock
groups in any version of OneNote.
Microsoft Office includes
OneNote, a program that functions as a digital organizer and notebook. It
allows you to gather pieces of information in one location rather than juggling
multiple files in multiple programs.
Notebooks
With OneNote, you create
digital notebooks that contain sections. Within each section, you can add text,
to-do lists, sound files, video file snippets from web pages and content from
other Office documents. OneNote contains a search function and the ability to
organize related information with wiki links.
Collaboration
OneNote 2010 offers a
function similar to Word's track changes. When you share notebooks, OneNote
highlights any changes made by your collaborators.
Requirements
To run OneNote, your
computer must contain a 500 MHz or better processor, 256 MB of RAM at minimum,
1.5 GB of free space on its hard drive and a monitor capable of displaying a
resolution of 1024 by 576 or higher. In addition, you must have 32-bit Windows
XP with Service Pack 3, Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 or Windows 7.
Both OneNote and Word can
serve as effective note-taking tools, and both are a part of the Microsoft
Office suite of applications, but the comparisons quickly turn to contrasts
examining the two programs side by side. OneNote is a free-form information
collector, well suited for research that includes data from a variety of
sources and formats. Word provides you with all of the tools needed to publish
your work, formatted for printing or electronic distribution.
Microsoft Word
Microsoft Word is a
full-featured word processing program. Its organizational paradigm is the
document, a structured file of text and images that can be divided into
sections and individual pages. Word includes nearly all of the tools necessary
for producing complete desktop-published documents from a single page to books
hundreds of pages in length. As a part of the Microsoft Office suite, Word can
work with files produced by other members of the suite, including Excel and
Access.
Microsoft OneNote
Microsoft OneNote is an
information gathering and collaboration tool. The program organizes free-form
notes, Web clippings, audio and other forms of media into notebooks. Within the
notebook, you may divide the information into different sections, each with one
or more pages of data. OneNote accepts input from the keyboard or in
handwritten form, and it integrates with other Office suite programs,
especially Outlook.
Capability Comparison
Because the two programs
address different usage categories, Word and OneNote are not conducive to a
side-by-side comparison. Both programs are effective in handling text input,
checking for spelling errors and allowing formatting of the characters (font
face, weight, and so forth). Where Word is well equipped to format output for
printing or electronic publishing, OneNote's strengths are in gathering and
organizing information, and its output capabilities are rudimentary.
Integration
The object linking and
embedding capabilities of Word enable it to integrate tightly with other
software tools. For example, an Excel spreadsheet may be inserted onto a Word
page, becoming a dynamic part of the document while remaining editable by the
spreadsheet program. OneNote can display snippets of Office files, but only as
static images. Any changes made to the source document are not automatically
reflected in the OneNote notes.
Microsoft's Groove software
for Microsoft Office lets several people work on a project together
simultaneously, no matter the physical location of those working on the
project. OneNote, another Microsoft program that serves as a virtual notebook
to compile notes and information, can be shared via Groove. Groove also allows
users to begin instant messaging-type conversations via communicator or even
make phone calls. MS Groove has many different uses to increase collaboration
and productivity.
Share Files
The primary use of Groove
is to share files. Each user has a separate desktop to which he can create,
save and modify files. The user can then designate which files can be shared
with other users. An administrator is assigned to a project who determines
which people are given permission to view the project. Files such as word
documents, excel files and onenote notebooks can be shared.
Communicate
Within Groove, there are
two main types of communication that differ from normal inter-office
communication, which occurs primarily through email. Groove allows users to
start a real-time instant messaging chat or a telephone call made via the
internet. This is helpful because users can discuss the project while looking
at it. While in the chat function, each user can insert the piece of the
project to which she is referring.
Meetings
Meetings can be held
virtually through Groove. The participants can create and add items to an
agenda for the meeting. The meeting functionality organizes the agenda
information, invites the designated attendees, records and shares minutes of
the meeting, and records the status of action items set throughout the meeting.
The meetings are conducted via the communication tools available within Groove:
real time instant messaging or phone.
Document Review
If multiple users work on a
single project, each will have different changes that he makes to the file. By
allowing each user to have his own desktop, the different variations of the
file are saved and then shared for document review. The administrator can then
synthesize the pieces of each user's file that have been agreed upon to produce
a single final project.
