  • The Mac vs. PC debate has been going on for decades. There are vehement supporters on each side. But what about those of us who don't have fierce loyalties to make decisions for us? We need facts about Mac versus PC.

Why have Macs been considered the "designer's computer?"

Macs have been the industry standard "designer's computer," because Macs were the first to use PostScript fonts. PostScript fonts make digital typography far more accurate and precise than other font types, making Macs the obvious choice for print designers. However, since PCs now support PostScript technology, this issue is no longer of importance.

    Hardware

In hardware, Macs have the edge because they come with good graphics cards, high-quality screens, and other design-related hardware items. PCs can easily be customized to use comparable hardware, but it takes some time and investment.

    Software

PCs come out on top when software is the issue, because you can get just about any software imaginable for Windows. Although industry standard design software is available for both platforms, and QuarkXpress works better for Mac, Windows offers many more software options, especially in 3D, architectural, and gaming.

    Price

PCs are significantly cheaper than Macs, and that is one reason why so many people use PCs. Adding quality hardware to a PC to make it comparable to a Mac's hardware does cost money, but it still comes out as less expensive.

    User Experience

The Mac is a beautiful piece of machinery, and combined with the beautiful Mac OS X, it makes work more enjoyable. However, if you are used to a PC and it would be too much trouble to learn a new operating system, then a PC will give you the best user experience.

I am sorry but your "Price," and "Hardware," sections are outright lies. Mac's have always, and probably always be, more expensive than PC's for comparable hardware, hands down. Also, parts avialability for PC's make upgrades cheap and easy to perform. We can compare them any day if you want.

At this point of time, they will both get you the same results. So it all comes to your preference between Windows or Mac OS and your budget. PC's are cheaper for comparable hardware that Macs deliver and the value is higher since you can upgrade your PC with ease. If you have the money to go for the premium look and price tag, then Apple will be happy to take your money.
