Open "my computer", "C:", then go to your program files folder and search for a "Java" folder. Find its location.

Delete its file, then attempt to install jre again.

Why do you have to go back to JRE 2.0 instead of 4.0? I think 4.0 supports all 2.0 does, doesn't it?

Uninstall JRE 4.0 from "Control Panel", and then download JRE 2.0 from the official website, and install. Don't forget to restart after uninstalling JRE 4.0
