I have the same problem before. mine is related to the powerpoint 2010 format. When i was trying to insert a video file(wmv) format it was crashing. tried all the other steps that was said above and none of them worked. Finally i selected save as 97 - 2003 presentation and then i tried to insert video files, it worked like charm.

when I removed Replay Media Converter (Applian software), mpg files could again be inserted without crashing PowerPoint. When I reverted my divx pro installation from version 8 to version 7, I could again insert divx video files. Retrying installation of divx version 8 reproduces the problem. Perhaps others may also find a solution by uninstalling incompatible codecs.

I suggest you try running a repair installation of Office from the Windows Control Panel.

Save the Powerpoint fileAs PowerPoint 97-03 before adding any videos THEN add the video
