  • Analyzing Data With SPSS: An Overview
    1. Open SPSS, usually by double-clicking the desktop icon with your computer mouse. This will open the Data Editor, the opening window in SPSS. The Data Editor window is basically a spreadsheet into which you can enter data.

    2. Enter your data. You can enter data by hand or import it from a variety of other sources, including spreadsheet programs such as Microsoft Excel. To import data from Excel or another source, click "File" to open a drop-down menu. From there, select "Open," then "Data." This will open a Data window. From the Data window, use the drop-down menu to choose the type of data source, such as Excel, of the file that you want to import. Then choose "Open."

    3. Examine the data in the Data Editor window in SPSS, renaming and reordering variables as necessary. The Data Editor window allows you to toggle between the data view, which displays the raw data, and the variable view, which displays the names of individual variables and information about each of them.

    4. Choose the type of analysis you wish to conduct. To do this, click the "Analyze" command at the top of the Data Editor. This opens a drop-down menu, from which you can select the procedure you wish to run. SPSS can run a wide range of analyses and procedures, including descriptive statistics, crosstabs, differences of means, linear regression, factor analyses and survival analyses.

    5. Run the selected procedure and examine the output generated by SPSS. When the program has run the analysis, SPSS will open an Output window, which will display the results. Your SPSS users guide and/or statistics manual can help you interpret your results, if necessary.
