Open Notepad by click on "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," then "Notepad." In Windows Vista and Windows 7 you can click "Start" and type "notepad" into Search and press "Enter."

Type 1, then press "Enter." Each section of your subtitles will be divided numerically.

Enter the time of when you want this text to show up and how long it should last. For example, if you want the text to start five minutes into the movie and last for one minute, type "00:05:00 --> 00:06:00" (without the quotes). Press "Enter."

Type the text you want showing up on screen as subtitles. After this, your SRT file should look something like this:

00:05:00 --> 00:06:00

This is the text that will show up on screen!

Repeat these steps for each subtitle section you need. The next section would be numbered 2, then 3 and so on. There is no limit to how many sections of text you can add.

Save the file with a .SRT extension. Click "Save as Type," then select "All Files (*.)". Remember to insert ".srt" at the end of the filename.
