Type the base and the exponent, without adding a space between them. For example, if your exponential expression is 3^4, type 34.
Highlight the exponent and select the "Font" dialog box, accessible by clicking the small arrow at the bottom right of the Font menu or by typing Ctrl+D.
Click on the check box next to "Superscript," third from the top under "Effects." Select "OK" to close the dialog box and return to your document.
The exponent should now be a small superscript number next to its base.
