  • What Leads to the Message
The untrusted connection message may appear when you go to a site whose URL begins with “https.” These sites are supposed to provide an encrypted connection. Firefox checks the virtual certificates presented by these sites to verify the site you’re navigating to is authentic. If it cannot verify the site’s identity through the certificate, you receive the warning message. The message may also appear when you try to access a Web content management system through the Internet.

    Safest Step
Mozilla says the safest thing you can do when you receive the “untrusted connection” message is to push the button labeled “Get me out of here.” Another option is to navigate to a different website. Try contacting the company or webmaster behind the site to report the error message.

    Bypassing the Warning
You can choose to move forward with viewing the suspicious website by pressing the “I Understand the Risks” button, then adding and confirming a security exception for the site. Mozilla warns that by doing this, you could open yourself up to identity theft or online “eavesdropping.”

    Reasons for Invalid Identity
Mozilla identifies several reasons why a site’s certificate may appear to be invalid. The website’s identity certificate may have expired, or your computer’s clock may be set to the wrong date. The certificate may apply to a different part of the same site. “For example, you may have visited https://example.com, but the certificate is for https://www.example.com,” notes Mozilla.
