How to convert quicktime video file to any format that windows media player can support?

My digital camera records video, but they're quicktime video files and you have to download quicktime to view them. i want to send some of these files to my friends and family to watch, but i don't want them to have to download quicktime. is there an easy way to convert them? do i have to buy a program?
