  • Two methods below to load a 3D model from a .SKP file (Google SketchUp modeler) into AutoCAD:
    1. DWG export from SketchUp

    • Export to CAD formats is available in the enhanced version of SketchUp - in "Google SketchUp Pro".
    •  First check your units setting in the "Units Panel". In the File menu then choose Export and "3D Model". Select the output format DWG or DXF.
    • With the Options button you can set the version (release) of the DWG format. Similarly you can export the 2D drawing using the optionu "2D Graphics".
    • In this export choose the scale 1:1 - "Full Scale".

    2. Conversion of SKP to DWG

The second option is the conversion of the native SKP format to DWG.

For this you can use e.g. Autodesk Revit (import CAD formats - SKP; export CAD formats - DWG), or the free 3D "maker" application Autodesk 123D - this software can load models in the SKP format and save them as DWG files.

  • Here is how to export Google SketchUp.

    2. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialog that now appears, locate a model you have been working on that you want to use and open it.
    3. Select "File" form the menu and choose "Export." From the listed options, choose "3D Model." A new dialog will appear.
    4. Click on the "Export Type" drop-down menu and choose "Wavefront OBJ" as the file type. Name the file and choose the location you want to save to. Click "Export" to save the model.
Then try to import this file into AutoCAD.

  • You should export 3D models from SketchUp, then import AutoCAD?
    1. Open Google SketchUp. Check the Units Panel in SketchUp Pro and crosscheck that the same units are set in the AutoCAD drawing that you are going to export your model to.
    2. Select the "File" menu and choose the "Export" option. Then select "3D Model" to open the dialog box.
    3. Fill in a file name for the model to be exported. Also select the export type from the drop-down list, either DWG or DXF.
    4. Click on the "Options" button to open the AutoCAD export options dialog box. This is an optional step, where you can fill out the version of the AutoCAD file you are going to export to. In the Export section of this dialog box, you can choose the components of your design that you will be importing, whether it is faces, edges, shapes or dimensions.
    5. Click on the "OK" button when you are done, and then press the "Export" button. You will now be able to open your saved DWG or DXF file in any version of AutoCAD that you may have.

  • SketchUp to AutoCAD is easy but AutoCAD to SketchUp is much complicated.
