Hook up your slide scanner to the Mac using a USB or Firewire cable, depending on the scanner. Flatbed scanners must have a light source in the lid to be able to scan transparencies. While you can scan multiple slides at once with a flatbed scanner, you probably will get better resolution and final digital images with a slide scanner. These cost a bit more than flatbed scanners and they generally only allow you to scan one slide at a time, but they are more precise and give you more control over the scan.

Scan your slides into the Mac using the software that accompanied the scanner. Use the highest-scanning resolution you can for the best images. The higher the resolution, however, the longer each scan will take. This software will allow you to save the images as JPEG or TIFF files. To keep good digital images, save them as TIFFs. If hard drive space is an issue, you can save them as JPEGs, but you will get some quality loss. Since you plan to save them to DVDs, keep them as TIFFs.

Open your digital slide images in a photo manipulation software package, such as Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. You can make tonal and color adjustments to your images here before you save them to a DVD. Often, especially if slides are old, the color may have changed or the slides will show other signs of age. For the most part, you can correct these problems in photo editing software. Save your adjusted files as separate files from the originals. Open your DVD-burning software.

While Apple offers disc-burning software as a part of its operating system, many people use a more feature-filled software package, such as Roxio Toast. Toast will give you more options for DVD burning, including encryption.

Drag your scanned slide files into the folder to be burned if you are using Apple's software or into the Data window of Toast. Toast will tell you how full your DVD will be and will give you more options for how fast you want to burn your DVD. You can burn directly to the Mac's DVD burner---if it has one---or to an external burner from either of these software solutions.
