How can I learn to synthesize/sequence music?

07/19/2011 03:50 by jvanhorn

I've always wanted to make music, and I know some people such as Basshunter (I think) originally started out making their music on their computer using music synthesizing programs. My question is, how would I learn how to utilize those programs?

I recently downloaded a demo of FL Studio, and am looking to purchase it for real. The problem is, I have no idea what anything does. I don't know where to start, I don't know what any of the buttons or knobs or dials do, and I was wondering how to learn? The online help, or what I was able to find, really didn't explain the basics very well. So if anyone has ever used these programs, how did you learn?

  • I'm kind of new to FL(and music) , but as far as I know if you really wanna use it well you need to have a midi controller, or something to easily play, record, and etc. If you just really want to play with notes with a sound such as something like a Piano, you can go right click either the Kick, Clap, or etc- press insert- and on the drop down bar click FL Keys. FL Keys should be added to the bar of patterns. Right Click the FL Keys new added purple button, then click "Piano Roll". Then you manually "draw" out the notes or if you have a midi controller like a keyboard, manually click the Record button and play it out yourself then edit and do whatever you want with the notes as you please. sum tuts i learned from were from this guy.

  • There are some good tutorial videos on youtube. Here is one of the best ones to get started: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPxIk-nJvT0
Just learn a little bit at a time and practice. The more you use it, the better you will become.

  • Learn by doing works best in my opinion. Set yourself a goal and try to figure out how to do it. Start with something simple like creating a drum pattern. Check the manual as you go and look for tutorials and youtube videos online, lots of basic intro type stuff is available for you to learn from.

  • I use FLStudio 6 Producer Edition.
You don't need to know how to read music though.
All you need is a basic understanding of music, and the rest comes with practice.
Find some video tutorials, which help a lot

  • Go protools, cubase, logic or acid. reason fl beats sound good is because the person behind the music isn't the engineer its all fake and preset, pick a bass that sounds good and thats done. and you don't have a full creative handle on it. fine if you just want to make beats for fun though. i use cubase and even with the vsts i can control them exactly how i want to. fl is less interesting with less control- however you can see straight through it if you've experience. creating a track has an order- concept, recording, mixing, sweeten, premaster. use whatever instruments you want. good condenser mic and some good acoustics- knowledge of the programs and a ton of practice and an ear for where to run with a concept. thats it.
