  • Depending on the type of broadband connection that you have coming into your home, you may be able to use WinFax without the need for an additional modem. While WinFax will not work directly over a standard broadband connection, DSL service provided by your local telephone company may allow you to use WinFax via an older analog modem provided you have specific software installed. Broadband Internet via a cable modem or satellite Internet connection cannot be used for WinFax, but you should still be able to set up a WinFax connection using an analog modem without the need for additional software.

How to Use WinFax with DSL

Some users of WinFax have reported problems when attempting to use an analog modem connection while they have DSL Internet active. This is because the Internet connection is being supplied by the same provider as their telephone service, causing an interference between the broadband Internet connection and the telephone line when the WinFax software is being used. Filtering software provided by the phone company is used to separate the two lines, keeping the WinFax software from causing this interference when it connects.

How to Use WinFax with Other Broadband Options

Since cable and satellite Internet connections don't travel through the same lines as telephone and DSL connections, they won't suffer from the same interference when using the WinFax software. Using a standard analog modem, you can use WinFax to send faxes from your computer without needing any special filters for your Internet connection.

  • if you use DSL and an analog fax modem, you'll likely need a DSL filter installed between the fax modem and telephone line connection.  Otherwise, you'll have problems sending or receiving faxes with any fax software including WinFax.  You can check out the WinFax forums at http://www.getfaxing.com for more details on this.
