  • It's kind of like comparing an apple to an orange, those two programs serve different purposes. SPSS is for statistical analysis, while Access is a database management system. Access only has a few statistical functions, nowhere near as many as Excel and SPSS. So you could say that while Access can store and manage (add, edit, delete, maintain related tables, query, etc.) raw data, SPSS would be used to analyze it.

  • There really isn't a comparison here. SPSS is a statistics package, whereas MS Access is a database.

  • Access is a database system for smaller databases and office folk that do not have (know how to deal with) a proper database (MS SQL, Oracle etc.).

SPSS is for data analysis (statistical and mashine learning).

For data management a SQL database is better (no need to sort files before making joins).

For data analyses (and manipulation and reporting of graphs and survey data) choose SPSS. Workfow: make raw analysis files in SQL import (or odbc) in SPSS, do analysis and reporting.
