  • Consolidating the Library
You may miss backing up a file if the files are scattered in different locations, so consolidating the items in your iTunes library is the first step to moving your library to a new computer. Open the iTunes Preferences window and click "Advanced." Click "Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder When Adding to Library" and click "OK." Then click "Organize Library" under "Library" in the "File" menu. Choose the "Consolidate Files" option.

    External Hard Drive
Connect an external hard drive to your computer and load the iTunes consolidated files onto it for easy transferal of the files. Locate the iTunes folder on the external hard drive by opening the Finder in Mac or My Computer in Windows. Click on the iTunes folder with the music files and drag it to the external hard drive folder. The files copy.

    Music Device
iTunes music can also be copied to a new computer by connecting a music device like an iPod or iPhone with iTunes. Connect the device to the computer and sync with iTunes to update the music library. Disconnect the device and reconnect it with the new computer to sync iTunes.

    CD or DVD
Back up your iTunes library to a CD or DVD to transfer the files to a new computer. The computer must have a CD burner to burn a CD or a DVD burner to burn a DVD. Insert the backup disc and click "Back up to Disc" under "Library" in the "File" menu. Click "Back up
Entire iTunes Library and Playlists" and click "Next." iTunes provides a back up copy on the disc. You may need more than one disc if you have many music files.

Transferring iTunes to a New Computer
The final step to moving your iTunes library to a new computer is to install iTunes on the new computer. Go to the Apple website at Apple.com and download the latest version of iTunes, which is iTunes 10. This version of iTunes works for both Mac and Windows computers. After it is installed, connect your external hard drive or music device to the new computer, and iTunes updates automatically. Alternatively, insert the backup CD or DVD and click "Restore" to restore the files to iTunes.
