First, understand what avi files are. Avi files are a compressed video stream.
Next, understand what you need to play avi files. Because avi files are video files, you need a video player. One popular free video player that is typically installed is Windows Media Player. However, beyond the video player, you also need a small program called a codec. A codec (coder/decoder) is a program that allows you to decode (similar to a secret message) the video so you can play it on your computer.
The easiest ways to watch an avi movie file on your computer is to use a movie player that can play movies and also has the codec for you to watch the avi files. One popular free movie player program that does this is VLC media Player.
If you don't want to install and use a new video player that wraps both the codec and the video player into the same program, then you can download and install codecs to watch the avi movie files. You can find a popular free (and open source) package of codec files to download from or try out another popular codec pack called XP Codec Pack.
Download and install a free AVI self-playing program, such as MakeInstantPlayer, to your desktop. Restart your computer after the installation is complete.
Run the AVI self-playing program. Drag the AVI file that is to be made into a self-playing executable file into the main body of the AVI self-playing program.
Click on the column next to "Output File" near the top of the AVI self-playing program. A window will appear on your desktop. Click the "Open" button to select your desktop as the location for saving your new AVI self-playing executable file.
Click on the "Fullscreen" and "Auto Quit" check boxes on the AVI self-playing program. Deselect the "Loop" check box.
Click on the "Make It!" button on the AVI self-playing program. Wait for the program to convert the AVI file into a self-playing executable file, which will be saved it to your desktop. Quit the AVI self-playing program when the AVI file has been saved.
Choose the AVI codec package that you would like to install on your Tablet PC. You can find a codec for most media players, and you can even download a specific AVI player if you prefer.
Download the AVI codec or player that you have chosen, and execute the installation file. The installer program might present you with a series of options about which media players to include in the installation and which file types to enable. Choose any you see fit to enable, but it's mandatory that you choose AVI and DiVx file types for enabling. Run the installation (by clicking "Run"), and let it automatically complete.
Run the media player you chose to install the codec for, and test an AVI video file. Your tablet PC should now play it without a problem.
Locate the video output port on your computer. Most PCs have a VGA port, Macs usually have DVI, and some machines have both. VGA ports have 15 tiny holes and are shaped like an upside-down trapezoid. DVI ports have 24 holes with four larger holes on the right side, and the port is rectangular in shape.
Buy a cable depending on the port you have on your computer. You will need an HDTV to connect the computer. The HDTV will have a VGA port and HDMI ports. You can purchase either a VGA cable, DVI to VGA cable, or DVI to HDMI cable.
Plug one end of the cable into your computer and the other end into a port on the TV--either the VGA or HDMI port, depending on the cable you bought.
Right-click on your computer desktop, and choose "Screen Resolution" from the menu that appears.
Click the "2" monitor, and click the drop-down menu next to the "Resolution" heading. Select the screen resolution of your HDTV. Refer to your HDTV owner's manual if you don't know the resolution of your screen.
Choose whether you want to "Extend the display" or "Duplicate the display." Extending the display will allow you to drag the video to the TV display. Duplicating the display will copy the display on your desktop directly to the TV display.
Download and install disc-authoring software to your computer. There are many different types of software available online. See Resources for a list.
Open the disc-authoring software, and click the "Add" button at the top of the window to add the AVI file to the disc.
Search the file directory of your computer in the "Add" dialogue box, and locate the area where the AVI file is saved to your machine. Double-click on the file to add it to the disc.
Insert a blank DVD into your computer's disc tray when you are ready to burn the disc.
Click the "Burn" button in the disc-authoring software window to begin burning. Allow time for the disc to burn. Depending on the file size, this could take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours.
