How do you delete the AVG Toolbar History?

Delete avg history:
1. Open AVG and click "History" from the top menu.
2. Click "Scan results" when the History menu opens. The AVG scan history will open. You can view the dates and results of scans here.
3. Select the history you want to delete. To delete more than one entry, press the "Control" button while clicking the history entries.
4. Click "Delete results" after you select the AVG history you want to delete. A window will open asking if you are sure you want to delete the history; click "Yes."
5. Open "History" again from the top menu to delete the second AVG history component. Select "Event History Log" from the drop-down menu. The Event History Log shows when updates and scans occurred.
6. Click "Empty list" when the Event History Log opens. A window will pop up asking if you are sure you want to delete this information; click "Yes."
7. Click "History" from the menu once more to finish deleting AVG history. Select "Virus Vault" when the History menu opens. The Virus Vault will open in a new window.
8. Click "Empty Vault" to erase the history of the Virus Vault. You can also delete a single Virus Vault entry at a time by clicking the entry and then clicking "Delete." A window will pop up asking you to confirm deleting the Virus Vault; click "Yes."

How to backup/export AVG DataCenter?

In case you need to create a backup or export of your AVG DataCenter, there are two possible ways how to do that:

1. Automatically
AVG Remote Administration performs regular backups automatically. They are created every 48 hours and stored for 30 days on your hard drive by default.
In case that you wish to alter these values, please edit the AVG Admin Server settings:
    Open the AVG Admin Server Monitor (Start -> Programs -> AVG Remote Administration 2012 -> AVG Admin Server Monitor)
    Click Server Settings.
    Swtich to the AVG Data Center tab.
    Modify needed settings under Perform regular database backups.

You can also change the settings through Admin Server configuration file (avgadmsv.ini). This file is stored in the following folders:
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVG2012\Admin Server Data

Windows Vista, Windows 7:
C:\ProgramData\AVG2012\Admin Server Data (Windows Vista, Windows 7)

The three values before the last value in avgadmsv.ini file refer to the regular database backup:
    DatabaseBackupPeriod=48
        How often in hours should AVG Admin Server backup database.
        Default value is 48 hours.
        In case you wish to disable regular backups, please set to 0.
    DatabaseBackupTime=00:00:00
        At which time of day database backup should start (local time).
        Default value is 00:00:00.
    MaxDatabaseBackupAge=30
        How long should Admin Server store regular database backup in days.
        Default vaule is 30 days.
        In case that you wish to disable deleting of backups, please set to 0.

Automatic backups are stored in the following location:
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg2012\Admin Server Data\DatabaseBackup

Windows Vista, Windows 7:
C:\ProgramData\AVG2012\Admin Sever Data\DatabaseBackup
Each backup is created into a separate folder which corresponds with the creation date and time.

When database backup is finished, message in AVG Admin Server Monitor is displayed.

2. Manually
In case that you need to create an unscheduled export of your AVG DataCenter, you can create it as follows:
    Run AVG Admin Console.
    Choose the Database export option from the DataCenter menu.
    This database export will can be stored into arbitrary folder.
In case you need to import a database from backup please proceed as follows:
    If you are about to install the AVG Remote Administration on a new server please refer to FAQ 4567.
    If you need to import your database on the current server please follow these steps:
        Run AVG Admin Server Deployment Wizard.
        Untick the Perform DataCenter database backup to folder option on the Database backup screen.
        Choose the Create new empty DataCenter database option.
        Choose the appropriate database type.
        Tick in the Import data into the database from folder option and using the "..." button please navigate to the folder with stored database exports.
        Finish the wizard.

What about Migration of AVG DataCenter from Firebird to a new database (e.g. MS SQL)?

In the event the DataCenter running on Firebird database becomes overloaded (for example due to.an increasing number of clients in the network), we recommend moving the DataCenter to a more robust database.

You can use any supported database - see their list in FAQ 4554. Please choose the one that can accomodate the number of stations you are planning to have connected to your datacenter.

The migration of your AVG DataCenter from Firebird database to a new database is generally very similar on all supported databases.

See the following steps for an example of moving the datacenter to a Microsoft SQL database:
A) Install the MS SQL Server
    if you plan to use full MS SQL Server (not Express edition), please install it prior to DataCenter migration
    in case the SQL server is running on different machine than AVG Admin Server, please make sure that SQL engine accepts connections from other stations. This can be configured in the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration

B) Run the AVG Admin Server Deployment Wizard
    select to configure both UpdateProxy and DataCenter role
    confirm creating of DataCenter database backup
    select "Create new empty DataCenter database"
    choose the database type you wish to use
        SQL Server 2005 Express - applicable for MS SQL 2000 Express / 2005 Express Edition
        Microsoft SQL Server - applicable for MS SQL Server 2000, 2005 and MSDE
    fill in the connection details
    select "Import data into the database from folder", and provide path to the previously created backup

C) Configure the UpdateProxy role
    in case it was already configured, you do not need to change anything
    these steps are only necessary to write these information into the new database and keep UpdateProxy active

D) Finish the AVG Admin Server Deployment Wizard
    click "Deploy" to create the new AVG DataCenter database in the MS SQL server

Now, please run the AVG Admin Console to verify the AVG Admin Server is configured and running correctly.

What are Necessary settings for MySQL database - max_allowed_packet?

To ensure the proper operation of AVG Remote Administration using a MySQL database for the DataCenter role, make sure that size of sent packets does not exceed the value of the MySQL global variable max_allowed_packet (which is 1048576 bytes, i.e. 1MB by default). Otherwise, there may be problems communicating with the server and error "Synchronization of configuration failed (Admin server returner error)" will appear in AVG Remote Administration.

You can use one of these two solutions:

Set the value for current run only
This will apply the setting until restart of the server occurs. Then the default value or value from my.ini will be used again. Note that you need to be logged as administrator with MySQL root privileges.

    On the MySQL server run this command
    set global max_allowed_packet = 10485760

Change Settings in the my.ini file
This will save the settings permanently, but requires a restart of the MySQL server.

    Edit the my.ini file on the MySQL server.
    Under the section [mysqld] change max_allowed_packet to read the following:
    max_allowed_packet = 10485760
    Restart the mysqld daemon.

What is AVG Supported database systems?

AVG Remote Administration supports several database systems. Their specifics and installation recommendations can be found below:

Firebird
This solution is appropriate for smaller networks with up to 150 stations. The database is a standard part of AVG Remote Administration. If this database system is selected, no further settings are needed.

MS SQL 2005/2008 Express
A reduced version of the Microsoft SQL Server, it can serve up to 1000 stations. The product is not a standard part of AVG Remote Administration. Its usage is not limited by any commercial license.
If you choose this type of the database system, you have two options:
    Keep existing DataCenter database
        Please select this option if SQL Server 2005/2008 Express is already installed on your computer. AVG DataCenter will be created automatically when you fill in the database parameters.
    Create new empty DataCenter database
        Please use this option if you want to install the AVG DataCenter on a new instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008 Express. In the next step fill in the database parameters. Afterwards you will be provided parameters for the server installation. Please use these parameters for the installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008 Express on your computer/server.
        In order to install SQL Server 2005/2008 Express Edition properly, you need to download and install Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 or higher. You can download it from the Microsoft website by clicking the following link:

        After successfully installing the .NET Framework, please download the installation package of SQL Server 2005/2008 Express Edition from the Microsoft web site:

Please note that during installation of SQL Express server, there are two options in Database Engine Configuration. Select the Mixed Mode option instead of the default Windows authentication mode.

MS SQL 2000/2005/2008
This engine can serve over 1000 stations in large networks. It is not a standard part of AVG Remote Administration and its usage is bound to the Microsoft SQL Server license. In order to deploy AVG DataCenter on such a database system, please fill in the database parameters and complete the AVG Admin Server Deployment Wizard.
Database parameter description:
    Computer name
    Defines the name of the station on which the database system is/will be installed.
    Instance name
    Refers to a particular installation, if more than one instance is installed on the station.
    Administrator’s username
    Predefined automatically, you do not need to change it.
    Administrator’s password
    Password for the database administrator.
    Database name
    Shows predefined database name.
    Username
    Type a new login name for the database (to be used for AVG Admin Server connection).
    User password
    Type a preferred new password for the database (to be used for AVG Admin Server connection).
Please note that during installation of SQL server, there are two options in Database Engine Configuration. Select the Mixed Mode option instead of the default Windows authentication mode.

Oracle 10g/11g
AVG DataCenter on Oracle engine is recommended for very large networks (more than 1000 stations). It is not a standard part of AVG Remote Administration and its usage is bound to a commercial license. In case the Oracle 10g database is running on different computer than AVG Admin Server, it is necessary to install the client part of Oracle database on that server. Additionally, please see FAQ 4558 in case the Oracle 10g database is running on 64bit server.
Database parameter description:
    Computer name
    Defines the name of the station, on which the database system is/will be installed.
    Instance name
    Refers to a particular installation, if more than one instance is installed on the station.
    Administrator’s username
    Predefined automatically, you do not need to change it.
    Administrator’s password
    Password for the database administrator.
    Username

MySQL 5
Can be used in a network with more than 1000 stations. It is not a standard part of AVG Remote Administration. In order to deploy AVG DataCenter on such database system, please fill in the database parameters and complete the AVG Admin Server Deployment Wizard.

    Service name
    Refers to a particular installation, if more than one instance is installed on the station.

To enable update mirroring (centralized update) support, please run the AVG Admin Server Deployment Wizard from menu Start - Programs - AVG 2012 Remote administration.
On the second page of the wizard select both DataCenter role and UpdateProxy role check boxes, and then proceed further with the wizard:
    You can backup your current database, although its contents will not be affected in any way.
    Click Keep existing DataCenter database.
    Specify the folder to be used for storing the downloaded update files on the server.
    Adjust or confirm the order of the update servers - this configuration will be transferred to the clients once the wizard is completed.
        The order of the servers specifies their priority - if one is not available, the next one is used
        The central update files are available at http://[server_name_or_IP]:4158/avgupdate
    Click Deploy to store the settings and restart the AVG Admin Server automatically.

Now, the clients will be able to update from this AVG Admin Server. In case of any problems, you can test the availability of the AVG Admin Server by accessing the following website from one of the clients:
http://[server_name_or_IP]:4158/

Note: If you want to use only the UpdateProxy function of the AVG Admin Server, please:
    Skip the DataCenter role settings.
    Set the clients manually (or by using another DataCenter / AVG Admin Server) to update from the server http://[server_name_or_IP]:4158/avgupdate

How to use centralized update in isolated network?

In case you are running the AVG Remote Administration in an isolated network (nor the AVG Admin Server has an access to the Internet) and you wish to use the centralized updates, then you can use the following steps. This will require to add the update files manually on the server and run a dedicated utility that will generate files that will allow stations to update.

Please proceed as follows:
1. Modify the AVG Admin Server configuration file to enable "offline mode":
    Open the following file in some text editor (notepad). The default installation folder for the file is:
        Windows XP
        C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVG2012\Admin Server Data\avgadmsv.ini
        Windows Vista/7
        C:\ProgramData\AVG2012\Admin Server Data\avgadmsv.ini
    Add this line at the end of the file:
    DisableUpdateDownloading=1
    Save the file and restart AVG Admin Server to load the new settings.
    Start AVG Admin Server Monitor -> Click the "Stop server" button -> Confirm stopping of the Server -> Click the "Start server" button.

2. Download the Genctf2012 utility:
    From this location, save the Genctf2012 utility to your computer (we recommend saving it to your desktop):
    http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/support/genctf2012_en.exe
    Run the file and choose place where the utility will be extracted.
    From the extracted folder (it will be automatically opened) copy the file genctf2012.exe into the folder where updates for AVG are saved. Default location is:
        Windows XP
        C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVG2012\Admin Server Data\update\
        Windows Vista/7
        C:\ProgramData\AVG2012\Admin Server Data\update\

3. Download updates and run the utility
    To the folder with updates, download update files for client stations (http://www.avg.com/update)
    Run the genctf2012 utility in that folder. Use this command in commandline (or create a batch file with it). The blank space and dot at the end are required!:
    genctf2012.exe .
    This will create two CTF files in the folder - avginfowin.ctf and avginfoavi.ctf. AVG client stations can now update through the AVG Admin Server.

Repeat step 3 to add new updates to the server. I.e. run the utility everytime you place new files in the folder to generate up to date CTF files. Otherwise stations will not recognize the new update files there.

Note: The Genctf2012 utility needs the libraries from VisualC++ redistributable package. Those libraries are a part of the AVG Client installation. In case that the AVG Client is not installed on your server, please download and install this package from the Microsoft's website at:

What is the Synchronization process in AVG?

Stations managed by AVG Remote Administration periodically perform synchronization with the AVG DataCenter.

1) Station Settings Synchronization
    Mandatory settings are transferred from the DataCenter to the station.
    Non-mandatory settings are transferred from the station to the DataCenter.

By default, the settings synchronization process is carried out every 60 minutes. To alter the synchronization period for stations, open the AVG Admin Console, go to stations settings -> Remote Administration section -> Synchronize configuration option.

It is also possible to request immediate settings synchronization from the AVG Admin Console. To do so, right-click the Stations node in the navigation tree, and select Synchronize settings from the context menu. To request synchronization on a particular station, you can right-click that station in the stations view, and select Station settings -> Synchronize settings.

Additionally, the synchronization occurs:
    Each time the station powers on/goes online its settings are synchronized within the period
    When the station connects to the AVG DataCenter for the first time, its settings are synchronized immediately
    When settings of a station or several stations are changed and confirmed from the AVG Admin Console

2) Scan Results Synchronization
This synchronization process sends data from the station to the AVG DataCenter. It takes place:
    Each time the station powers on/goes online (within 20 minutes)
    Immediately after scan completion or after an infection is detected by Resident Shield
    Immediately or within 20 minutes after a scan result modification is carried out by a user on the station in the AVG program (healing, moving to vault etc.)

It is also possible to request immediate scan results synchronization from the AVG Admin Console. Simply right-click the Stations node in the navigation tree and select Ask for scan results from the context menu. To request the results from a particular station, right-click that station in the stations view, and select Tasks related to Scan -> Ask for scan results.

3) Station Components States Synchronization
This synchronization process sends data from the station to the AVG DataCenter. It takes place:
    Each time the station powers on/goes online (immediately)
    Each time a component state is changed (within 5 minutes)

It is also possible to request immediate synchronization of the components state from the AVG Admin Console. Right-click a station in the stations view, and from the context menu select Station settings -> Refresh components state.

What about Sending of e-mail notifications about different AVG related events in your network?

In case you wish to be informed about different AVG related events in your local network, you can set up the AVG Remote Administration to automatically send you an e-mail notification when a selected event occurs.

The following events can be monitored in your network:

    Out of date AVG version
        Station with outdated version of AVG.
    Out of date virus database
        Station with outdated version of virus database.
    Station needs restart
        Station needs to be restarted.
    Not communicating station
        Station is not communicating with DataCenter for a very long time.
    Station is infected
        Virus infection on station
    Not communicating after installation
        Station is not communicating after remote installation.
    New update
        New update of the given priority has been released.
    Scan interrupted
        Scheduled scan was interrupted.
    Update failed
        Station update has failed.
    License expiration
        The license number on the station will expire soon.
    Out of date scanning engine
        Station with outdated version of scanning engine.

In order to set up the AVG Remote Administration to automatically send you an e-mail when one of these events occurs, please proceed as follows:

    Run AVG Admin Server Monitor.
    Click on the Server settings button.
    Switch on the E-mail tab.
    Fill in the appropriate values and confirm changes by clicking OK.

As soon as the AVG Admin Server is configured for sending e-mails, you can enable sending of notifications as follows:

    Run AVG Admin Console.
    Select the Notifications option in the left-tree menu.
    Righ click the desired event and choose the Active option.
        In order to access its settings please double click the line.

Note: In order to avoid excessive e-mail traffic and floods, it is possible to group simillar notifications. In this case only one e-mail arrives to your mailbox with a list of afflicted stations (e.g. virus outbreak).

What about Proxy server configuration in AVG Admin Server?

Run the AVG Admin Server Monitor from START > Programs > AVG 2012 Remote Administration > AVG Admin Server Monitor and click the Server settings... button.
Choose the UpdateProxy tab, enable the option "Use proxy server", fill in the server address. If you need to specify proxy authentication options, enable the "Authentication" checkbox too, and fill in the login details you wish to use.

AVG Remote Administration allows you to configure/monitor AVG Firewall settings on the client's computers. All settings values applicable for stations or groups can be defined as mandatory value or as an optional value (default settings) identical to the AVG station settings.

Within the AVG 2012 version it is possible to set as mandatory also individual items or rules. This option allows you to closely monitor the settings of AVG Firewall on client's computers in the network.

In order to ease the AVG Firewall configuration, Firewall settings does not differ from the client installation.
Firewall settings hierarchy consists of three levels:

1. Shared Firewall settings for stations
    AVG Admin Console -> Tools menu -> Shared Firewall settings for stations

Shared settings defined in Shared Firewall settings for stations always have higher priority then the others. It means, that items set as mandatory in the mentioned settings cannot be changed at any lower levels.

2. Shared Firewall settings for group
    AVG Admin Console -> right click the desired group -> Group setting -> Shared Firewall settings for group

Shared settings defined in Shared Firewall settings for groups have higher priority than the particular station settings, but lower than the Shared settings for stations.

3. Individual station Firewall settings
    AVG Admin Console -> right click the desired station -> Station settings -> Firewall settings

Particular Firewall settings for stations have the lowest priority. It means, that all items set as mandatory in higher levels (mentioned above) cannot be changed there.
What Firewall settings can be synchronized with stations?

The following options can be synchronized with stations:
    Remotely enable/disable firewall
    Security settings
    Network areas settings
    Profile switch
    Profile options (including remote profile switching)
        Application rules
        System services
        Gaming mode settings

Note: If you need to set up more defined rules as mandatory at once, you can use the multi-select option.
How to get the AVG Firewall log from a station?

In case you need to get the AVG Firewall log from a station in your network, you can access such log directly within the AVG Admin Console this way:
    Run AVG Admin Console.
    Go to Stations -> Stations with AVG Firewall folder and right click the desired station.
    Choose the Station statistics -> Show Firewall log option.

What about Full access control in AVG Admin Console?

It is possible to set Full access control to AVG DataCenter. Full access control can be set by opening the DataCenter menu (in the top menu of AVG Admin Console) and clicking the AVG DataCenter settings... option. Then you can select the Full access control in the lower part of the settings window.
The Access control settings dialog is divided into two areas. The smaller one is called Account list. Here, the list of all user accounts is displayed, as well as their state (Active or Inactive). After left-clicking on one of the accounts you will see its description under the list. The left-clicking also activates the second area of the dialog called Settings of account, which contains two tabs – Account rights and Group access. In the account list you can do these following things too:

    Create a new account - right-click anywhere in the Account list area and select the New account... from the context menu
    Edit an existing account - right-click on one of the account within the Account list area and select Edit account... from the context menu (or double-click on one of existing accounts).
    Clone an existing account - right-click on one of the account within the Account listarea and select Clone account... from the context menu.
    Delete an existing account - right-click on one of accounts within the Account list area and select Delete account...from the context menu.

The Account rights tabcontains all actions accessible to the user of the selected account. To forbid an action, uncheck the checkbox next to its name. If you uncheck the checkbox next to the name of category (like Stations, Scans etc.), you will forbid all actions from this category.

The Group access tab allows you to set access rights to user defined groups of stations. Double-click on one of these groups to trigger a roll-down menu (or right-click on it to trigger the context menu with same contents). Now choose the permission type. You can give the user of the account the Full access to the group, allow him/her just to view the group by selecting Read only, or completely forbid him/her to access the group by choosing No access option.
